ISO PAS 8800 is a recently published standard that addresses the safety of systems that use Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. In combination with existing standards, such as ISO 26262 and ISO 21448, it plays a crucial role in vehicle safety architecture.
ISO 26262: Road vehicles – Functional Safety
ISO 26262 is an internationally recognized standard that deals with the Functional Safety of electrical and electronic systems in vehicles. It outlines requirements and processes to ensure that systems operate safely, especially in critical situations. ISO PAS 8800 complements this standard by providing specific guidelines for automated vehicle systems, which often rely on complex algorithms and AI-driven decision-making.
ISO 21448: Safety of the intended functionality
Also known as SOTIF, ISO 21448 focuses on the safety of automated driving functions, emphasizing the identification and assessment of risks associated with automated systems. ISO PAS 8800 enhances this approach by defining the requirements and work products when AI technologies are used, which is becoming increasingly relevant as the automotive industry embraces autonomous technologies.
Bridging the standards
The development of a comprehensive safety framework requires a connection between the aforementioned standards. ISO 26262 addresses the Functional Safety of vehicles as a basic process, while ISO 21448 focuses on intended functions. ISO PAS 8800 enhances these areas, ensuring that safety requirements for AI are fulfilled.
A holistic approach to safety
The combination with ISO 26262 (basic standard), extension to include intentional safety functions (SOTIF ISO 21448), consideration of AI (ISO PAS 8800), as well as further application-specific standards (i.e. ISO TR5469, etc.), creates an Automated Driving Systems framework (ADS framework) that ensures a holistic approach to the evaluation and assessment of individual products.
We offer a comprehensive ADS framework that combines ISO PAS 8800, ISO 26262 and ISO 21448. Our team specializes in providing tailored solutions, including product, process and personnel certifications. By leveraging this expertise, manufacturers can navigate the complexities of automotive safety standards with confidence, ensuring compliance and enhancing the safety of automated vehicle systems including AI.
