Rhode Island, USA, Delays Ban on PFAS in Food Packaging

SafeGuardSHardgoodsJune 25, 2024

SG 99/24

The US state of Rhode Island has further postponed its prohibition of PFAS in food packaging. The ban will now become effective in January 2025.

In 2022, Rhode Island approved measures to prohibit intentionally introduced perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food packaging. In 2023, the effective date in the law was postponed to July 31, 2024 (SafeGuardS 90/23).

On June 17, 2024, the governor of Rhode Island signed S 2850 Substitute B/HB 7691 into law to further push back the effective date of the ban on intentionally introduced PFAS in food packaging by six-months.

Additionally, the use of a regulated chemical as a processing agent, mold release agent or intermediate will be considered intentionally added from July 1, 2027, if the regulated chemical is detected in the final package or packaging component.
