All new automotive electrical and electronic products (manufactured or imported) and new materials placed on the market in the European Union must comply with several directives and regulations. The list of substances that are prohibited or subject to declaration is included in the Global Automotive Declarable Substance List (GADSL).
We test for substances according to:
- Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH): the main aims of REACH are to ensure a high level of protection for human health and the environment, including the promotion of alternative test methods, as well as the free circulation of substances on the internal market and the enhancement of competitiveness and innovation.
- Persistent organic pollutants (POP): the aim of the POP regulation is to protect human health and the environment. It covers the search of 30 substances including some pesticides, a group of industrial chemicals, two groups of undesirable byproducts and some substances like flame retardants, additives, solvents, lubricants etc.
- Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS): PFAS, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), are a unique class of industrial chemicals that are chemically inert and resistant to high temperatures. Their properties to repel water, grease and oil enable them to be used in the manufacture of a variety of consumer products. PFAS have been regulated under Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP Regulation), PFOA is a reprotoxic (toxic to reproduction) category1B and carcinogenic category 2 substance. PFOA is also classified as persistent, bio-accumulative and toxic (PBT). There are several PFAS, including PFOA, on the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) for authorization under REACH
- End-of Life Vehicle (ELV), directive 200/53/EC: EU rules aim to make the dismantling and recycling of end-of-life vehicles more environmentally friendly. This directive mentions the prohibition of the use of hazardous substances when manufacturing new vehicles (especially lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium) except in defined exemptions when there are no adequate alternatives.
In addition to these regulatory chemical analyses, we also use GC-MS, GC-FID, Pyrolysis GC-MS, HPLC,ICP-OES, ICP-MS, FTIR and NIR to identify specific substances.
Why choose SGS for your chemical analysis?
