SGS Outlines the Anticipated Updates to World Renowned Management System Standards ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001

February 13, 2025

We outline the anticipated updates to world renowned management system standards ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), along with representatives from nominated bodies like SGS, is progressing with revisions to its key management standards: ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management). These updates aim to align the standards with evolving industry practices, technological advancements and global challenges.

We want to ensure that you are aware of the timelines, as we know them now, but are subject to change.

ISO 9001 Quality management system standard

  • The latest Committee Draft of revisions to ISO 9001 is currently under review and in the coming months will be amended and approved as necessary
  • It is anticipated that the Draft International Standard version (DIS) will be issued for public comment towards the end of 2025
  • The Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) is expected to be available in May-June 2026 with the newly revised ISO 9001:2026 published in September next year

It is too early yet to share definitive anticipated changes as consensus needs to be reached. Discussions to date have featured enhanced focus on risk management, resilience and opportunities, integration of digital transformation considerations and greater emphasis on sustainability and supply chain management.

ISO 14001 Environmental management system standard

  • Current version is ISO 14001:2015
  • Draft Internation Standard (DIS) expected between February and May 2025
  • The draft update gives a good idea of what can be expected in the next version of ISO 14001
  • One main frame condition decided for the update has been to limit to the changes to provide better understanding of existing requirements, and to avoid introducing new requirements
  • The main changes as outlined in the draft updates of ISO 14001 are:
    • Adaptation to text and requirements in the latest version of ISO's Harmonized Structure (HS) for management system standards
    • Amended text to provide for better understanding of existing requirements by rephrasing current requirements or inclusion of notes
    • Clarifications of requirements by enhancing the guidance in Annex A for some identified key topics

  • Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) due in December 2025
  • The new version is expected to be published in January 2026

As always, there may be changes following the stakeholder hearing of the draft update version. But in short, what is revealed means quite moderate changes for companies. The changes are far from the extent of changes that was experienced for users for the 2015 edition.

ISO 45001 Occupational health and safety management system standard

  • Current version is ISO 45001:2018

It has just been confirmed that the revision of ISO 45001 is approved and is progressing into the planning phase. It is expected that the reviewed version of the standard is likely to be published in 2027.
